Art Classes for Grades K-8

Winter session classes for children will begin registration on November 28.
Classes start Tuesday, January 22 - Saturday, March 23, 2019.
Note: Reduced class cost for children's classes!

In Danforth Art’s studio art classes, children will develop an understanding of the elements and principles of art, which are the concepts all artists use when creating work. Like other disciplines, art education repeats concepts and skills, with lessons becoming more challenging over time. We have designed our program so that students may repeat classes in order to continue study in a medium, like drawing or painting, until they move onto a new age or grade level.

All students at Danforth Art School keep a portfolio of work, collecting sketches as well as finished pieces here to take home at the conclusion of the session. Family members are invited to an informal exhibition of student work on the last day of classes. All materials are provided for children's art classes.

Drawing Classes

• Encourage drawing in its various forms: from observation, memory and imagination
• Provide a variety of drawing tools such as charcoal, colored pencil, pen, pastels
• Allow children to learn techniques and develop skill using these tools
• Include references to other artists, art movements and ideas

• Allow students to experiment with different kinds of paint and brushes in order to make choices about self-expression
• Provide opportunities for students to learn color theory and to develop skill in creating compositions
• Include references to other artists, art movements and ideas

  Art Studio Classes

• Allow students to experiment with the full spectrum of art materials in order to make choices about self-expression
• Encourages discovery by allowing students to construct sculptures and mixed media art
• Provides opportunities to develop spatial reasoning and solid craftsmanship practices
• Include references to other artists, art movements and ideas

  Please note: Monday classes meet 7 times, all others meet 8. There are NO regular classes from Saturday February 16-Friday February 22 due to vacation week.

Students will learn about the basic tools and techniques all artists use and will be introduced to a variety of artists as they are encouraged to express their own individual viewpoint. Some of the materials that will be used include collage, colored pencil, oil pastels, watercolor and acrylic paint, air-dry clay, wire and papier mâché. Students may take the same level class more than once; lessons will not repeat. No supplies are needed. Students are encouraged to dress for art-making!
