About the Exhibit

Scott Magoon: Slightly Snarky, Otherwise Different is an exhibition of selected images created by the popular children’s illustrator Scott Magoon—images that celebrate his unique perspective on the world.  For example, Loch Ness—from Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating and first place prize winner in the Danforth’s juried show Picture This— appeals to Magoon’s quirky sensibility. “Many picture books are similar in feel,” he observes. “I like ones…that are a bit odd, or slightly snarky, or otherwise different.”

While Magoon’s choices may be rooted in the strange or odd, his illustrations impart an inspiring and optimistic message.  And, as both an artist and art director for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt children’s division, Magoon works very hard to make sure he presents illustrations that consider the child first.  “Picture books are a gateway to learning and life,” he says. “A picture book's mission is great because it is among the very first experiences of the wider world a child will encounter.”

About the Artist

Scott MagoonMagoon has won acclaim for past children’s books that include Hugo and Miles In I’ve Painted Everything (2007), Mystery Ride (2008), and Mostly Monsterly (2010). Working with other artists, designers, and authors as an Art Director for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s children’s division, Magoon has gained a unique perspective that informs his own artistic choices. Experience with layout, design, and typography helps him see “both sides of the coin” and help him plan out a book better than if he were only an illustrator.  Currently a resident of Reading, MA, where he lives with his wife and two sons, Magoon has consistently been selected for the Society of Illustrators The Original Art, an exhibition that showcases original work from the year's best children's books nationwide.
