About the Exhibition

Danforth Art is pleased to exhibit paper-engineered books in the exhibition Once Upon a Pop-Up From the Ellie G. Levine Movable Book Collection in our ChildrenÂ’s Gallery. This is our second exhibition featuring works from Levine’s collection, which represents a variety of pop-up book styles and techniques, all masterful examples of the book as art form. Works in this exhibition focus exclusively on the theme of fairy tales, fanciful and sometimes frightening folk stories that are firmly engrained in our collective imaginations. Through dazzling feats of paper engineering, these classic, magical and cautionary tales are beautifully transformed, truly works of art that will be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Works on view, including books by Vojtech Kubasta, Mathew Reinhart, and Robert Sabuda, bring to life imaginative renderings of beloved characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, and many others.

About the Children's Gallery

Danforth Art’s Children’s Gallery is dedicated to the art of the picture book, and our exhibitions contribute to museum and school programs that engage, inspire, and transform the lives of children and adults. Picture books are a child’s first art gallery experience, teaching the youngest members of our audience about color, shape, and line.
