Bearing Witness: Aids Crisis in Boston,
a conversation with exhibiting artist Michael David and Michael Dowling, Artistic Director of Medicine Wheel.

About the Exhibition

Drawings at the heart of “Bearing Witness” were part of a series created by Michael David in response to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. First exhibited at the Massachusetts College of Art in 1989, this critically acclaimed show received a Boston Arts Lottery Grant and traveled to numerous venues across the country. Selected drawings and related prints currently on view at Danforth Art display one artist’s confrontation to a specific crisis, as well as his more timeless reflection on the dignity of those suffering from illness.

About the Artist

Boston artist Michael David received his BA at Brandeis College in 1977, his MFA from Boston University 1980 and attended the prestigious summer program at Skowhegan, Maine in 1981. David has taught at numerous institutions, including the Worcester Art Museum, the MFA, Boston University, and is now Art Department Chair at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. He has exhibited widely in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia and San Francisco and was profiled in 100 Boston Painters (Schiffer Press in 2012). Awards include Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowships in 1989 and 2002, a Blanche Colman Award in 1997, and a Berkshire Taconic grant in 2000. His work appears in numerous collections, including the Boston Athenaeum; Boston Public Library; Danforth Art, Museum\School; Duxbury Art Complex; Fogg Museum of Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Art and Healing

Danforth Art often explores the use of art as a mechanism for healing, for discovery, and for recovery, and this theme runs through our spring exhibitions. Learn more.
