A Space Opens Up on Wednesday, March 14, 12:30 pm, and Sunday, April 15, 3:00 pm.
As a painter, Edie Read’s work has never been defined or limited by the canvas. Her current installation on view at the Danforth is comprised of 8 sculptural forms created from stiffened paper stretched over hidden armatures. These gouged wood, canvas and paper structures hover against walls and hang suspended from the ceiling, creating evocative forms that are sometimes vegetal, sometimes skeletal—all painted in a range of glorious color. Like theatrical stage sets, Read’s forms are as much about the spaces they create as they are about themselves.
Inspiration for Read’s current work comes from many sources. Close viewing of Antonio Gaudi and Piero della Francesca on trips to Spain and Italy, as well as her reading of Rilke who wrote that “Space reaches from us and construes the world,” provides the basis of ideas presented in her current exhibition. A 2005 artist residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts provided Read with an opportunity to collaborate with writer and poet William Gass on issues of form and metaphor, and she developed her ideas during a 2010 residency at the Albers Foundation in Connecticut. Work on view at the Danforth represents almost 18 months of collaboration with internationally recognized curator Judith Hoos Fox.
Fox observes that Read’s work is responsive to Gaudi’s sense of a “surface created by sweeping a line through space” and that Read's response to this notion was generated by both an interest in the human body and her ability to shape three dimensional space. Read has created “a seamless merging,” says Fox, “an integrated overlay of notions that sometimes were in opposition – inside/outside; protection/vulnerability; two dimensions and three; organic/geometric; space and occupant.”
Artist Edie Read received a BA in art history from Boston University, a professional diploma from School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and her MFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has exhibited in a number of museums and non commercial galleries, including the Babson College; Boston Center for the Arts; Emmanuel College; the ICA, Boston; Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, MA; the New Art Center, Newton, MA; and the Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA. Her work has also appeared in one person and group shows in numerous galleries, which include the Clark Gallery, Lincoln, MA; Les Yeux du Monde Gallery, Charlottesville, VA; Priest Gallery, Worcester, MA, and Stavaridis Gallery and Thomas Segal Gallery, both Boston, MA. Read has been artist-in-residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Bethany, CT and at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, FL, and has served on the faculty at Assumption College, Worcester, MA; Boston College, Boston, MA; Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA; School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. She currently lives in Brookline and works from her studio in Arlington, MA.
Judith Hoos Fox, who also works under the moniker of c2 –curatorsquared, is widely regarded independent curator. With an undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr and a graduate degree from the University of Minnesota, Fox began her museum career at the Walker Art Center Minneapolis, Minnesota before coming to Boston as a curator first at the ICA and then the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College. Since 2002 she has been an independent curator for numerous institutions, including the Harvard University Art Museum, Cambridge, MA; the Holon Design Museum, Holon, Israel; Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL; RISD Museum of Art, Providence, RI; Tufts University Art Gallery, Medford, MA and many others. In 2008 she co-founded Curator Squared with Ginger Gregg Duggan, and together they create exhibitions that explore contemporary cultural issues. This exhibition marks her first experience working at the Danforth.
