About the Exhibit

Deborah Davidson is an artist in love with language, using text to create complex visual images.  “Language has been seeping into my work, insinuating itself for the past ten years,” she has said.  “I am interested in the evolution of image as an analogy, a shadow of the text.”  Using cut out shapes that are collaged into painting, Davidson enters into a complicated process of wearing down the surface and then building it up again.  “Having developed from the use of actual language, the forms become a personal hieroglyph. Underlying the paintings is the attempt to resolve the conversation between wanting to reveal and at the same time the desire to obliterate.”

Master Class

Mixed Media: A Process of Transformation

Explore the link between process and content with artist Deborah Davidson.  This master class will include a visit to Deborah’s exhibition at the Danforth Museum of Art, where she will explain her complicated working process and its development from the use of language.  Students should bring in 2-3 small artworks in any state of completion, on paper, canvas or panel.  They do not need to be successful and should not be “precious.”  Deborah will set up conditions for surprise and push students beyond comfort levels to explore content as they transform their artworks by collaging, painting, gluing, sewing and other combinations.
